Topic of the Week

Hey everyone! I hope your summer is going well! Mine has been pretty busy and I don't even know what time zone I'm in most days.

I want to try out a "Topic of the Week." The idea is to explore a topic more in depth and share our opinions and what we have learned. Please post thoughtful comments or just share some good sources on the topic.
I'm in AZ right now so all I'm hearing about is the SB 1070 (the immigration bill). Does it infringe on civil liberties? Is it all bad, or are some parts acceptable? What kinds of laws could AZ pass to solve their problems? What role should the Feds play in AZ's immigration?

Since this is the first topic and it's summer and most people are probaly not reading the blog everyday, this will probably be up for more than a week. Thanks for participating and I hope we can get a good discussion going!

I sympathize with the people and government of Arizona. Pheonix is has the most kidnappings in the nation, they take the brunt of illegal drug trafficking on their border, and deal with tremendous amounts of violence in relation to drugs. The federal government has been talking out of their neck for YEARS about fixing the border and solving immigration etc, and we still have nothing.
So it seems only reasonable to me for Arizona to solve a problem which disproportionately affects them. I think that not only are they within their constitutional rights to enforce already existing immigration laws, but they would be remiss to allow such transgressions in the first place.
If the government is serious about immigration then they should put their rhetoric where their policies are and make some hard decisions regarding the rule of law and human rights. If there is one thing that Governor Brewer has done with her controversial bill, is to raise awareness on a national scale, and to put Arizona's drug trafficking and immigration issues on the top of the list, where it belongs.
